10 Days Mount Rwenzori Hiking

This 10 day Rwenzori Mountain hike is the best package especially if you want to challenge yourself with breathtaking adventures. It takes you through hiking adventure to Uganda’s most mystical mountain range-Mount Rwenzori with the highest peak-Margheritta that stands at elevation of about 5109 meters and then to Queen Elizabeth National Park for to explore most of its incredible savanna grassland wildlife species that include among others the African elephants, buffaloes, antelopes, birds, crocodiles, hippos a mention but a few. Detailed itinerary

Day 1: Depart from Kampala to Kasese

You will be picked up by one of our experienced driver guides after breakfast at your respective hotel ready to embark on a journey to western Uganda to Rwenzori Mountain ranges. Drive via Kampala-Masaka-Mbarara road and have a stopover at Mbarara Town for lunch and Mpambire drum center to see the work of the royal drum makers. Another stopover will be made at Equator for photo taking and relaxation. After, you set off and drive via Queen Elizabeth National Park and around this area, do not miss to catch a glimpse at some wildlife species as you head to Rwenzori Mountain ranges-Kasese district. Upon arrival, check in at your respective lodge for relaxation, dinner and overnight stay at Hotel Margherita, Equator snow lodge (Luxury), Ruboni community camp (Budget).

Day 2: Hike to Nyabitaba hut

After a cup of tea or coffee, you will set off to Nyakalengija trailhead to meet the guides as well as porters. It is from here that a guide and porter will be assigned to you and then you start your hike via 1600 meters’ trailhead to Nyabitaba approximately 10 kilometers. Depending on your hiking speed, the walk through this trail may last you about 4 to 5 hours and ascent of 1200 meters. The walk usually takes you via Bakonjo homesteads and fields around the bamboo and high elephant grass and bushy area. Proceed via a trail along River Mubuku and then arrive at Nyabitaba Hut for rest, dinner and overnight stay.

Day 3: Climb to John Matte hut

On this day, you will proceed via a descending trail to a forest to Kurt Shafer Bridge below River Bujuku and Mubuku. Hike via the bamboo forest then through a slippery moss covered rock. From Nyamileju rock shelter, you can spot Mount Stanley and Mount Speke before you get to giant heather, lobelia and groundsel. After, arrive at John Matte Hut for a rest, dinner and overnight stay.

Day 4: Connect from John Matte Hut to Bujuku hut

On the 4th day, wake up early in the morning ready to embark on six kilometer trail that will take you about five to six hours and hike to 560 meters. This trail goes down to cross River Bujuku and then enters the lower Bigo Bog which is a refuge to the giant lobelias.  From here, you head to Lake Bujuku and have breathtaking views of Mount Baker to the south and Mount Stanley to west. After, Bujuku Hut lies just at the shadow of Mount Baker and Mount Speke. It is from Bujuku Hut that you will have dinner and overnight stay.

Day 5: Hike to Kitandara hut

A trail to Kitandara Hut is about 4 kilometers and starts by you ascending to about 390 meters and again descend to 340 meters. You will walk via a groundsel vegetation about 4372 meters to Scott Elliot pass that also a major col between Mount Baker and Mount Stanley. Continue descending down to Kitandara Hut about 4023 meters where you will have overnight stay.

Day 6: Connect to Guy yeoman hut

This takes you through a five kilometer stretch of ascending and descending about 5-6 hours. At Lake Kitandara, have breathtaking views of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and the surrounding areas. After, proceed with a steep hike over boulders and then encounter some mud prior reaching pathway to fresh field pass. At this point, you will be amazed by dramatic views of Mount Stanley. Later, descend via rocks and muddy areas to Guy Yeoman Hut which stands at 3262 meters.

Day 7: Descend to Nyabitaba

On this day, you will take a six kilometers and this covers about five hours. This takes you through a descent via steep slopes and you have to be physically fit. This area passes via muddy areas then cross rivers before you come to Nyabitaba Hut for overnight stay.

Day 8: Descend to Nyakalengija and transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park

On the 8th day, you will descend back to Rwenzori Mountain Services Offices. The hike will take you about 2-3 hours via a 10 kilometers trail. Descend via Mubuku River and then to Rwenzori Mountain Services Offices to hand in the hired items that if you happen to hire one for that day. After, you will have a rest and then embark on a trip to Queen Elizabeth National Park. On arrival, check in at a lodge of your choice for relaxation, dinner and overnight stay at Mweya Safari Lodge/Kyambura Game Lodge (Luxury), Enganzi Game Lodge/Bush Lodge (Midrange) or Pumba safari lodge/Simba Safari camp (Budget).

Day 9: Game drive and boat cruise in Queen Elizabeth National Park

Get up early in the morning and have a cup of tea or coffee at your respective lodge and after, you set off for a morning game drive via Kasenyi trail. While on a game drive via this trail, you will be amazed by incredible views of savanna grassland dwellers such as African elephants, buffaloes, lions, birds and several antelope families. Later, drive back to the lodge for lunch and some rest, then embark on afternoon launch cruise via Kazinga channel where you will look out for hippos, crocodiles, many aquatic bird species and others. After, return to the lodge to have a rest, dinner and overnight stay at Mweya Safari Lodge/Kyambura Game Lodge (Luxury), Enganzi Game Lodge/Bush Lodge (Midrange) or Pumba safari lodge/Simba Safari camp (Budget).

Day 10: Depart back to Kampala

Early in the morning after breakfast, check out from the lodge and then drive back to Kampala. On your way back, make a stopover at Mbarara Town for lunch and Equator for final photo shooting then proceed to Kampala and this marks the end of the 10 days Rwenzori Mountain hiking.
